Shamela’s “vartue” killed me and it’s just such a joke; the ploy of virtue on Shamela’s part to get B’s or Booby as he’s called money by marrying him.
While I was not really a fan of the content of this book I really appreciate the lengths that Fielding went to in order to point out the faults of Pamela and make fun of them. Fod continued his quarrel with Richardson in The History of the Adventures of… ….

The way he discredits Pamela and her family is very interesting from a historical perspective ie. A couple of parts made me giggle, but it wasn’t anything life altering. This literary farce does, however, have its merits but they can only be fully appreciated with an intimate knowledge of Pamela.

The Historical Register for the Year I think it is partially because in its parodying of Pamelathis version of the story seems a bit hypocritical rather than simply exaggerated. It was the first of several books to burlesque the sentimental prudery of the immensely popular Pamela.

It is a direct attack on the then-popular novel Pamela November by Fielding’s contemporary and rival Samuel Richardson and is composed, like Pamela, in epistolary form. Reading Shamela amounts to re-reading Pamela through a deforming magnifying glass ; Richardson’s text yhe rewritten in a way that reveals its hidden implications, to subvert and desecrate it.
It’s not even particularly well done. One of the funniest books I read in college!

This short story is a collection of letters either supporting or criticizing the story Pamela. You could practically see Fielding furiously scribbling with one hand and flipping Richardson off with the other. A second edition came out on 3 November lide same year which was partly reimpressed and partly reset where emendations were made.
